April 21st, 2010
It’s a repeat performance for Arizona at the top of the Fortune 500 list. Five local companies again made the list of the nation’s largest public companies with Avnet leading the way:
- Avnet Inc. came in at No. 142, up from 142. It also was the No. 45 company on the top 50 bang for the buck list, breaking down revenue per employee and assets.
- Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold took the No. 154 spot compared with 146 last year. Freeport was No. 21 on the best investment sublist based on return on investment.
- US Airways Group Inc. again claimed the No. 222 spot.
- Republic Services came in at No. 278. It also took the No. 7 spot among the 50 fastest growing Fortune companies. It was not listed last year because of its merger with Allied Waste.
- PetSmart Inc. landed at 393, taking a leap from No. 468.
Insight Enterprises didn’t make the list this year.
Wal-Mart Stores moved up a notch to claim the No. 1 position with $408 billion in revenue. Last year’s top company, Exxon Mobile came in at No. 2.
