Jacksonville State wins approval to offer its first doctorate degree

Jacksonville State University has been approved to offer its first doctoral degree program.

The Alabama Commission on Higher Education approved for the college to offer a doctorate of science degree in emergency management, according to a press release.

The program will begin next fall.

JSU President William A. Meehan said the approval is the “biggest change in the university’s role since we became a university in 1967.”

Meehan said the doctorate will be a capstone for the emergency management program and will help Alabama meet critical needs in that field as a result of recent events such as the Gulf oil spill and Hurricane Katrina.
