U.S. Steel to idle temporarily Granite City Works steel mill

United States Steel Corp., one of the largest U.S. steel manufacturers, will idle temporarily its steel mill Granite City Works in Granite City. The company said late Tuesday afternoon that it would also idle an iron ore mining and pelletizing facility in Minnesota and steel mill Great Lakes Works in Detroit.

U.S. Steel said the facilities would be idled over the next few weeks, but the steelmaker gave no precise dates.

The company cited its "continuing review and analysis of market conditions and their impact on customers’ orders," saying it is consolidating operations. It said it would idle facilities "temporarily," but didn’t say for how long or when the workers would return to work.

Approximately 3,500 employees will be affected at the three plants, but U Free Credit Report and Score.S. Steel didn’t say who many would be impacted at Granite City Works. The local steel mill employs about 2,120 hourly workers and salaried employees.

"We believe that our difficult decision to temporarily consolidate our production is a necessary response to current market conditions," U.S. Steel Chairman and CEO John Surma said in a statement.
